The Power of Perspective: How Great Leaders Turn Challenges into Opportunities

On 12 January 2026, Dr. Christina Love contributed to the Department of War, Defense Civilian Personnel Advisory Service (DCPAS) mentoring program as part of the “TEAM Talks” series with a talk entitled, “The Power of Perspective: How Great Leaders Turn Challenges into Opportunities.” In this video, Love explores how leadership mindset directly impacts organizational outcomes. The talk focuses on shifting from a “problem-oriented” perspective to an “opportunity-oriented” perspective.

One of the core takeaways includes the role of constraints. Rather than seeing limitations (such as budget, personnel, or time) as permanent roadblocks, the video suggests that these constraints can be used to unlock creativity and fuel innovation. Another important takeaway is Love’s encouragement for leaders to ask better questions; that is, major emphasis is placed on the quality of inquiry. By changing the questions leaders ask—from "What assumptions am I making?" to "What does this make possible that wasn’t possible before?"—teams can identify paths forward that weren't previously visible.

The final and perhaps most central takeaway is the idea that leaders must reframe obstacles. This approach provides a framework for leaders to help their teams see opportunities where others only see setbacks, effectively reclaiming the narrative of a challenge to boost morale and productivity.
