Student Achievement

CGSC is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission (HLC) to grant Master’s degrees to qualified candidates of the Command and General Staff Officers Course (CGSOC), Advanced Military Studies Program (AMSP), and the Advanced Strategic Leadership Studies Program (ASLSP).  Additionally, CGSC is accredited by the HLC to grant the Bachelor of Arts in Leadership and Workforce Development and undergraduate certificates to graduates of the Sergeants Major Course (SMC).
As a member institution of the Higher Learning Commission, CGSC is fully committed to transparency in reporting student achievement to internal and external stakeholders.  What follows are retention rates, completion rates, and graduate placement rates for those CGSC programs with the authority to grant a master’s degree, bachelor’s degree, or certificate.

[3] The SMC-DL course has 2 staggered classes in session at the start of an academic year (1272 students this report). Only 1 class finishes each year (509 certificates this report). The class that received 509 certificates started with 598 students, at a completion rate of 85%.

Explanation for these relatively high retention, completion, and placement percentages:

  • Students from the Armed Services and U.S. governmental agencies attend CGSC courses as part of their natural career progression.  CGSC does not recruit students, accept Title IV financial aid, or market its programs.
  • Students pay no tuition and receive full salaries for their government service (benefits included).
  • CGSC graduate degree programs are 10 months in duration.  The CGSC undergraduate program is a degree completion program contingent on completion of the 10-month SMC in addition to meeting other undergraduate degree requirements.  CGSC enrolls students for the full length of their respective programs. Consequently, retention and completion rates tend to be the same.
  • All graduates are assigned to positions upon CGSC course completion based on the requirements of their Armed Service or government agency.
